Jeffrey L. Angart, DDS : How to choose the right toothpaste for you

With over 200 toothpastes out there, picking the right one is absolutely overwhelming… It shouldn’t be surprising that there are many false advertising claims and Whitening IS ONE OF THEM!

A whitening toothpaste does not whiten your teeth, instead, it is extremely abrasive when attempting to remove stains such as coffee, red wine and cigarettes. We have seen many cases where using a whitening toothpaste removes your enamel.

Use a paste with gingivitis protection to reduce the bacteria that causes gum disease, bad breath and decay. Tartar protection tooth paste effectively removes plaque from above the gumline.

A tooth paste containing either Fluoride or Potassium Nitrate will help fight tooth decay and can reduce sensitivity to hot and cold.

Finally, in our practice we recommend using a small pea sized amount of non-whitening toothpaste on an electric or soft bristled toothbrush for a least 2 minutes, twice a day.
