The sad truth is that the majority of these “miracle products” fall very short of their lofty claims. Uneven whitening, sensitive teeth and gums, terrible taste, and messy gel are far too often part of the deal. Even worse, some of these products come with all of the above side effects and in the end you’re left with barely noticeable results.
Fortunately, it’s not all bad news as there are plenty of whitening products that work extremely well. We’ll point out some of the great ones later, but first lets take a short look at some of the duds.
Less Than Stellar Whitening Products
These products might have some redeeming qualities such as price etc. However, their drawbacks make them hard for us to recommend.
- Whitening toothpastes – Go ahead and use a whitening toothpaste if you want too, just don’t expect any noticeable difference.
- Brush-on whitening gel – Even though it’s inexpensive and easy to use, the blotchy, inconsistent results and awful taste make brush-on whitening not worth the trouble.
- Whitening strips – Far more effective than toothpaste and brush-on whitening and even more convenient than some of the more powerful whitening methods, but still not consistent or powerful enough to make the cut.

If you want consistency and dramatic results, don’t waste your time or money on anything but these proven whitening products.
- Custom whitening trays – With the right balance of affordability and noticeable results, whitening tray kits are an excellent solution. However, be sure you spend the extra money for a quality kit or request one from your dentist because cheap trays can be messy and uncomfortable.
- Whitening pen – Similar to brush-on whitening gel, but much more precise, faster, with no bad taste, and higher quality whitening ingredients. A high-quality whitening pen can be a fantastic, easy-to-use teeth whitening solution.
